Rant About Car Insurance

Written by David Dunn on February 4, 2008 – 8:58 pm

As most of you will be aware, I passed my driving test on Thursday 31st January 2008 (last Thursday) and since then I’ve been looking at the price of a car and insurance.

Now, the price of the car isn’t the problem I can pick up a car for anything from £300 upwards so affording that isn’t going to be a problem.

However, when I go to do a car insurance quote (with me being 17) the price is colossal. For what’s meant to be one of the cheapest cars to insure, an ‘N’ reg Vauxhall Corsa, we’re talking £2100 at the cheapest insurer.

So… looks like I am going to have to pay SEVEN times the amount that the car is worth for insurance alone.

I personally think that’s ridiculous, yes, fair enough, my age group might be one of the highest for accidents etc. but it doesn’t mean that all of us drive around like complete idiots.

I might even be tempted to start a new website named “Buy Me Car Insurance” haha!!

So this is just a plea for help really - I’m posting this on both FerrariDave and Buy Me A Ferrari to try and get some help:

Anyone got any ideas as to decent ways to lower the premium I’ll have to pay?

Any cheaper cars that I could buy to lower the premium?

Anyone like to donate an odd quid from their PayPal account would be great (anything at all from 50p upwards would be great - or even $1 if you are in the States): you can do so by sending it to: me@daviddunn.co.uk (not that I am expecting anyone to but it would be great if you did).

I’ll even give your site a mention or do a blog review if you are kind enough to donate.

  1. Tam Says:

The wife drives a Corsa, I’ve not passed the test yet but am listed on the insurance as a named driver.

    All in, she pays £400ish.

Maybe you could get a family member to insure the car in their name, and add you as a second driver, I don’t know if that’ll work though, certainly no expert.

Direct Line were the cheapest as they don’t do middlemen. Cheaper than anything we found on price comparisom websites.

  2. David Dunn Says:

@Tam: None of my immediate family drive other than my grandparents.

It would cost me £600 to be put onto their insurance, however, they pretty much rely on the car so I wouldn’t really get much use out of it.

Will definitely go get a quote from Direct Line now though as never even thought about them before.

    Cheers!

Is that an annual rate or a monthly?

That might not be too bad, considering time frame.

I know it can be pretty high here in the states for your age range. It’s just the insurance company algorythms. Yours is the biggest risk group for them. Sometimes young people can get a discount for getting good grades in school - proves that they are more responsible.

Are there taxes involved with your insurance payment? Seems to me that is a big factor in the UK.

    Good luck with it David!

You could give Quinn a try.

That was the company the wife went with right after she passed her test, they were the cheapest for her at the time.

  5. David Dunn Says:

@Pam: The price I have states is annual but it is still quite expensive and definitely not money I have readily at my disposal right now unfortunately.

I believe there is some sort of tax yeah but not entirely sure what it is. (Isn’t there a huge tax on everything from the UK? haha

Thanks for the good luck - I’m gonna need it!!

@Tam: Tried Direct Line last night and it’s still a little bit more expensive than the cheapest quote I have so far. Quinn I tried a while ago and it was quite a bit more expensive than the cheapest quote I have.

I’m just gonna have to keep saving and selling stuff!!

  6. Rich Says:

Its crazy, when i passed, it was about a year after untill i could aford insurance… My first policy (the cheepest) was £1300 a year for a 1.4l Rover 214si.. (Paid monthly - £120 month)

Now, a year later with 1 year NCB its been reduced down to £800 a year.

  7. David Dunn Says:

@Rich: Yup, it is very steep the prices - hopefully I’ll be able to afford it in a couple of months though. It’s frustrating at the moment though!

Have a driving license and still having to get the bus places haha!

  8. Van Insurance Quote Says:

I can tell you something David, making money from the internet is allot harder than you may think mate. Now don’t get me wrong, it can be done and you may be doing it now heading towards your Ferrari and if you are well done.

It takes time to build any business on-line or off-line, so take your time and stick to one affiliate program until you start making money, then go on to something else. Take it from me, I know from experience.

    Good Luck David.

  9. Janni Says:

Hi David. Do some research most of the time a new car will decrease your premioums.

  10. Richie Says:

Hi David or anyone else for that matter. I used to work for a car insurance company and know certain ways and means to get cheaper insurance. I’ve often thought about setting up my own site divulging the secrets or if anyone would like to make a donation to my bank account i’d happily provide the info.
